I have tried to select articles that represent an animal welfarist
view (i.e. National Animal Interest Alliance), as opposed to animal
rights (PETA), but cannot be responsible for
any off-site links. Some sites may contain graphic descriptions of
animal abuse and/or photos, I've made notations next to these links.

Breeding
I have absolutely no objection to
breeding purebred, pedigreed animals from healthly bloodlines. However,
many who breed dogs and cats have little regard for the care of the
litters produced or the quality of potential homes. Others allow intact
animals to roam freely and aren't equipped to deal with the
consequences of multiple litters.
Wildlife
are kept in captivity for a number of reasons. While being kept in
captivity is sometimes necessary for animals that can't fend for
themselves, others suffer ill effects. This continues to be a subject
of controversy.
Animal fighting, particuarly
dogfighting, is increasing in popularity, in spite of stricter laws
recently passed in many states. This "sport" is becoming popular among
teenagers, so education about the cruelty involved is essential. Dogs
rescued from fighting are not rehabilitated easily, if at all.
Cockfighting is also a problem in many areas.
Animal hoarders present a major
problem for rescuers and shelters due to the numbers of animals they
amass. Hoarders take in more animals than they can humanely care for,
often deprive them of sufficient food and water, keep them in crowded
and unsanitary conditions, and usually withhold veterinary care. Most
hoarders start off as concerned rescuers who end up getting far in over
their heads.
Many people believe that
puppies, kittens, and other animals make good presents. However, these
"pets as presents" are often given to people who aren't prepared to
care for an animal, including kids. A lot of this animals will end up
in shelters once they're no longer practical to take care of.
